WCU's Pat Brown delivers keynote address for national honor society

Pat Brown, dean of educational outreach at Western Carolina University and president of Alpha Sigma Lambda, the national honor society for nontraditional adult students, delivered the keynote address as the society’s chapter at Villanova University recently its celebrated its 50th anniversary.

Brown (right) also led the induction of new members into the society and presented Villanova’s president, the Rev. Peter M. Donohue, with an honorary induction.
 
Founded in 1842, Villanova University is the oldest and largest Roman Catholic institution in Pennsylvania, with an enrollment of more than 6,300 students, Brown said.

“The 50th anniversary of Alpha Sigma Lambda at Villanova University was one of the signature events celebrating the Office of Part-Time and Continuing Studies’ 90th anniversary year,” Brown said.

Alpha Sigma Lambda national honor society was established in 1945 as a means of recognizing academic excellence for nontraditional students.

The society seeks to motivate and recognize adult students who, while managing work, family and other life responsibilities, achieve and maintain high scholastic standards.

Brown also has served as treasurer and vice president with the organization. She initiated the establishment of the Mu Epsilon chapter of Alpha Sigma Lambda at WCU in 2004 and has served as president since 2006.
